Top mounted dampers can be used for a number of reasons. Whether it is to reduce energy costs, keep out the cold air, or even just to replace a broken existing damper. Top mounted dampers continue to be one of the best solutions for all of these needs.
What is a top mounted damper?
Top mounted dampers are an ingenious device that mounts to the top of the flue on your fireplace. Once installed, there is a cable that will run the length of your system in to the firebox. A bracket will be installed on either side of the firebox wall and be used to keep the damper in the closed position. The end of the cable in the firebox will have a handle attached to it enabling you to pull the damper down and shut, or release it from the bracket allowing the damper to open itself.
The outer bars on the top mounted damper acts as a spring mechanism. This is what allows the damper to raise itself. Under the lid of the damper there is usually a silicone seal that will prevent cold air infiltration. Furthermore, there are many different types of top mounted dampers to suit your needs and system. Some are made for use with masonry systems and other for prefabricated fireplaces.
Why do I need a Top Mounted Damper?
The need for one of these devices can be many. The most common is cold air coming into the fireplace when it is not in use. The damper top mounted dampers excel at taking care of this issue due to the nature of a fireplace. As the fireplace becomes cold the draft in the flue often reverses. This causes cold air to rush into the home. Installing a top mounted damper seals the top of the flue shut which does not allow for the air to reverse down the chimney.
Old broken dampers are another reason for installing a top mounted damper. Many times installing one of these ends up being significantly cheaper than installing the old style of flue dampers. Not to mention, you get the added benefits of the top mounted style.
Energy efficiency is another very good reason to have one installed of any vented fireplace system. Not only do they stop cold air from coming in during the winter months, but they help eliminate cold air from leaving the home via the flue during the warm months.
