Chimney-Fireplace-Caps

Chimney caps are a very important and often overlooked item on venting systems. The fireplace cap or chimney cap is used for more reasons then just keeping out pesky critters. Not only do flue caps serve a purpose, but they look pretty darn good as well. Like almost everything these days, you have options.

Do I need a cap on my chimney?

The answer with out a doubt is YES! The cap on your chimney can help to prevent animals from entering, house fires, water damage, and even downdrafts.

Water Damage:

Without the proper flue cap, water can enter the system that the flue is servicing. This can lead to deterioration of either the masonry or metal within the flue. Many of the issues seen with flues are caused by a failing chimney cap or lack there of.

Preventing Fires:

One of the main components of fireplace caps is the screening. The screening acts as a spark arrestor. This breaks up large sparks into smaller ones helping to prevent roofs or surrounding structures from catching fire.

Preventing animals and debris from entering:

The above mentioned screening also acts as a barrier to stop animals and debris from falling into the system. Not having a flue cap is the number 1 reason for flue blockages.

Prevent Downdrafts:

Wind rushing over the roof of the home can cause high pressure at the top of a flue. This will cause cold air or even smoke to enter into the home. The lid of the chimney cap can actually help to minimize this acting as a wind break.
