Chase covers are usually found on prefabricated chimney. The chase cover is the part that caps off the very top of the chimney, preventing water and debris from entering the chase. Prefabricated chimneys are usually chimneys that are sided rather than masonry. This means that the interior structure is most likely built using wood. The second way is hearing or seeing water. Hearing water drip on the top of your fireplace may signal a leak from the chase cover. Additionally seeing water come from the louvers of the fireplace is often a chase cover issue as well. Undoubtedly the best way to determine and possibly catch the issues early is to keep up on your yearly inspections.
